Installation

Using Safari Extensions is pretty easy, once you enable them in Safari 5. To enable Extensions you'll need to first turn on the Safari Developers' menu. Make sure that 'Show Develop menu in menu bar' is checked in the Advanced pane of Safari's preferences.

From the new Safari menu item titled 'Develop' select 'Enable Extensions.' You should now be able to double-click the Thurly installer and start shortening URLs. You can now also manage all of your new Extensions from the Safari Preferences pane. This is where you can uninstall Thurly at any time. Enjoy.

One minor thing that you'll have to do before shortening your very first URL though is to either close your current open browser window and open a new one or just restart Safari. This will only have to be done the very first time after installing Thurly.

Calling upon Thurly

Invoking Thurly is even easier than installing it. Hard to believe, huh? Open up Safari and surf the web. When you come across a site you want to share with the Twitter-verse simply press click the Thurly button in the Safari toolbar. Its the one with the teeny-tiny scissors. Thurly will automatically shorten the URL of the site you are visiting present it to you.

Now just highlight the shortened URL and paste it wherever you like. Mail. Twitter. A forum. Anywhere.

Extra bells and whistles

As we expand upon Thurly in its new, Safari Extension, form, we'll be adding lots of new features. So just hang in there with us.

Uninstalling Thurly

You can uninstall Thurly at any time from the Extensions tab in Safari's preferences. If you're using an older version of Thurly and want to ditch it, simply use the installer to do so (you can get it here). Run the installer and choose the Remove option. Easy as pie.

Requirements

We love Safari and the Macintosh. Thurly uses some of the latest technologies in Apple's version 5 of Safari.

What kind of name is Thurly?

When looking for a short, unique name for our URL shortening service (http://thurly.net) we stumbled across the word Thurl. One of its definitions is: "To cut through." With the thurl already looking much like the abbreviation URL we stuck a fancy little "y" on the end and voila: Thurly.
